Following the 2023 earthquake, AFD is financing the reconstruction of resilient rural homes in the provinces affected by the February 2023 earthquakes in southeastern Türkiye.
Context
On February 6, 2023, a series of devastating earthquakes struck 17 provinces in southeastern Türkiye, affecting 14 million people.
Rebuilding housing is a top priority for the government, with 1.44 million rural homes to be reconstructed. External funding from international donors is supporting this nationwide effort.
The project is financed by a €200M sovereign loan from AFD, co-financed by a $200M loan from the World Bank.
Description
The loan supports the reconstruction of approximately 1,400 resilient and efficient rural houses, as well as related local infrastructure (water, roads, lighting, community centers, etc.). In parallel, technical assistance will improve the regulatory framework and strengthen the capacities of: (1) the Turkish Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, and (2) the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) in their post-disaster response. Nearly 3,000 houses will be rebuilt thanks to co-financing from AFD and the World Bank.
Impacts
The financed project promotes more sustainable, comfortable housing adapted to climate risks. It directly benefits around 5,000 households and has a structuring effect on public reconstruction practices.
It also contributes to the outreach of French expertise in circular economy and energy efficiency.
Sustainable Development Goals
Sustainable Cities and Communities
Goal 11 seeks to rehabilitate and plan cities and all human settlements in ways that offer everyone employment opportunities and access to basic services, energy, housing, transportation, green public spaces, and more – while improving resource use and reducing environmental impact.
